Tips 路 advice from my notebook

What I wish someone had told me.

Not articles. Notes, taken along the way through my struggles and my good surprises, on both sides of the Atlantic. Each one comes from something I actually lived through, and each one saves you from living it my way.

Pet sitting: ask about the breed, not just the price

Before leaving my dog with anyone, I always ask whether they have looked after that breed before. A nervous small dog and a calm big one are two different jobs. An honest sitter will tell you if they are not comfortable, and that is a good sign.

Taxes on both sides: do not guess, not the first year

Your first clients: start with the people who already know you

We think we need a brand, a site and a thousand followers before selling. We do not. Your first ten clients are almost always people who have seen you work. Write to them before you spend a cent on ads.

Have your contracts read, even the short ones

The contract you sign quickly is the expensive one. One review, even of a single page, is worth the price. Look closely at payment terms, who owns what you produce, and how the contract ends.
